Museum of Glass

Location:

tucson, az

The main concept for the glass museum design is of an adaptable spatial configuration between interior and exterior spaces. Through the use of light, outdoor openings, and adaptable glass partitioning spaces, the museum will be able to change and adapt based on the needs of the users and internal functions.  This the core weaving circulation allows for users to experience a holistic view of the building and the functions within it as well make it possible for a wide variety lighting and spatial qualities.

The structure of the building is predominantly concrete with glass curtain wall of varying opacity and colors. This variability creates a playful and light environment within the building will also functioning as a much needed screen on the north and south side of the building. The contrast between the solid structure of the building is meant to highlight the glass components of the buildings as well as create large open spans for light and glass to be features.

Supported on a stainless steel metal frame, the glass envelope of the building hangs at least three feet from the building’s edge. This placement allows for air circulation and easy maintenance of the system.  The changing colors and opacity within the glass panels of the facade provide sun shading while also providing a playful atmosphere within the structure. The array of transparent and translucent glass placed along the envelope provide for an interesting interplay of movement and views for the public on the interior and exterior of the building.

In addition to the coloring of the glass panels, the panels are also positioned at opposing angles to each other. This angling creates a unique texture to the building and will create a unique interaction with sunlight as hits the woven glass. The open spaces created between the angled panels creates interesting moments of clear views into and out of the building if seen at the right angle.

Through the weaving of circulation, program, and materials, the glass museum is meant to provide its visitors with an ever changing experience of the space.
